Langley sits on a bluff about two hundred feet above Grand Lake, at the west end of the Pensacola Dam on State Highway 82. Roughly 600 people live here year round. On a July weekend, that number is dwarfed by boaters, campers, and visitors heading for the water, Disney across the dam, and the marinas up the shoreline.
Small town, heavy seasonal traffic, and a lake managed by a state agency make for injury claims that do not follow the usual script. If you were hurt here, a Langley personal injury lawyer can sort out which agency holds the evidence and which deadline actually applies. 2|22 Injury Lawyers represents injured people throughout Mayes County and the Grand Lake area.
The mix here reflects a lake town at the base of a dam:
This matters more than most people expect. On the water, GRDA Police patrol Grand Lake alongside the Oklahoma Highway Patrol Lake Patrol. On the roads, Mayes County deputies or OHP may respond. A crash near the dam can involve a different agency than one two miles up the shoreline.
Tracking down which agency wrote the report, and requesting body camera or dash footage before it cycles out of storage, is often the first real work in one of these cases.
Sometimes, and missing it ends the case.
Most Oklahoma injury claims carry a two-year deadline under 12 O.S. § 95, and wrongful death claims run two years from the date of death.
But claims involving a government body follow the Governmental Tort Claims Act, which generally requires written notice within one year of the loss under 51 O.S. § 156. The entity has 90 days to respond, and suit generally must follow within 180 days of a denial.
The Grand River Dam Authority is a state agency. It built and operates the Pensacola Dam and manages the lake. That means some Langley-area claims can fall under the one-year notice rule rather than the familiar two years. It is worth checking at the start of a case, not the end.
A rule violation becomes evidence of negligence in a civil claim. Under 63 O.S. § 4210, no one may operate a vessel recklessly or negligently, overload past the capacity plate, exceed posted speed limits, or run within 50 feet of another vessel above 10 miles per hour.
Boating under the influence is separately illegal at 0.08 under 63 O.S. § 4210.8.
After a crash, 63 O.S. § 4214 requires the operator to render reasonable assistance, give notice by the quickest means available, provide identifying information in writing to anyone injured, and file a report with the Department of Public Safety when there is death, injury, or property damage above $2,000. Where someone is killed or seriously hurt, the operator must submit to drug and alcohol testing.
Usually. Oklahoma follows comparative negligence under 23 O.S. § 13. You can recover if your share of the fault was 50% or less, with your award reduced by your percentage.
Insurers lean on this hard in lake cases. Expect an argument that a passenger should have worn a life jacket or that a swimmer strayed outside a marked area. Those points are answerable with evidence rather than conceded.
Oklahoma claims generally cover medical treatment including air transport from a remote scene, future care, lost income and reduced earning capacity, physical pain and suffering, mental anguish, scarring, and property damage.
Since September 1, 2025, damages for physical pain and suffering are capped at $500,000, with the cap lifted for injuries that are severe and permanent or where the defendant acted recklessly, with gross negligence, fraud, or intentional malice. Mental injury damages are capped at $1 million under similar exceptions. Economic damages are not capped, and wrongful death claims sit outside the caps entirely.
Lake country cases turn on details city cases never raise: which agency responded, whether a state entity is involved, and whether summer witnesses can still be found. Sorting that out early is what keeps options open.
